Never before has any female staff at the University of Goroka been given the red carpet treatment. On September 30th, it was a night to remember for many of the female workforce (130 heads), who showed up at the Bird of Paradise dressed in their tropical island themed wear.

The women looked outstanding in their dresses as they were offered a rose stem each by the masked male student who offered their arm to them to take as they escorted them to their chairs.

A red carpet was rolled out for this special evening to make the women feel even more special. There was the Creative and Communication Arts live band all set up, with the husky local artist Friedanna, belting out golden oldies much to their delight. Women got up to shake their booty not having any cares at all but simply enjoying the night.

The night was organized by the Council as a meet and greets night for the women to meet with existing female council members; Gayle Tatsi and Pro-Chancellor Dr Julienne Kaman and two newly sworn in members; Secretary for Department of Personnel Management, Taies Sansan and Kopkop College Executive Director, Maria Kopkop.

The highlight of the night was the presence of Ambassador to PNG, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, Erin McKee, who graced the night with her words of encouragement to women telling them “never to apologize for having a voice”.

Leaving the women in stitches straight after McKee’s half hour speech were the duo comedians, Omokoy and Freddy who left the tear streaked women begging for another performance.

An opportunity was given for the women to air their grievances in the presence of the only male present-Chancellor Joseph Sukwianomb.

Points on the discussion were collated and will be given to management for their perusal with a hand up brief for Council as well on having a working committee on addressing issues affecting females on campus.

Many issues were raised but top on the agenda was workplace and Sexual Harassment; Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Policy and Salary Disparities.
