Message from the PVC - Academic and Innovation

It is my great pleasure to welcome new and continuing students and staff to the University of Goroka that is strategically located in the heartland of the most populace Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. This university had produced thousands of teachers and educationists who are now passionately serving in different parts of Papua New Guinea and abroad. The year 2017 marks 20 years of service in teacher training and education as a fully pledged University since 1997. It has a proud history of quality teacher training and would continue to do so in the next 20 years. UOG is the university of choice because all students selected this year were from their first choices.

The University of Goroka has now diversified its academic programs since it was declared as fully pledged university. The University is currently offering content courses in the different fields of sciences, social sciences, education and also technical and vocational education. These programs are offered through dual model by way of conventional and distance education. The School of Post Graduate Studies offers honors, masters and PhD studies. Some of the unique programs offered at UOG are Early Childhood Education, Special and Inclusive Education, Midwifery and Management in Tourism and Hospitality. The other new courses offered this year were Bachelor of Business Accounting and Bachelor of Business Management. At present, UOG have residential international students from Solomon Islands and Vanuatu studying and living on campus. The UOG Open Regional Campus in Honiara is also offering courses to students who are unable to come to study at the University of Goroka.

At present, UOG’s academic programs and activities are offered on campus and in regional campuses in Mount Hagen, National Capital District and Honiara in the Solomon Islands. We have Distance and Flexible Learning (DFL) Centres in Simbu, SHP and Morobe Provinces. UOG is in the process of establishing DFL Centres in Gulf, Madang, Oro and Maprik in ESP by the end of this year. The DFL initiative is to bring quality learning and add value to students and providing an education that is closer to the people.

The University of Goroka remains committed to providing quality education through teaching, learning, tutorial activities and researching. The university also remains committed to recruitment of qualified and experienced lecturers and tutors. It has the responsibility to align and implement government policies such as the National Qualification Framework. The Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research & Innovations) has established collaboration and networking among sister universities; such as UNITECH and Divine Word University to create a uniform system to award credit points that will be recognized in the awarding of qualifications. This exercise will create a pathway for learners to benefit from courses offered in different universities in Papua New Guinea. The overall aim is to meet the quality and standard set by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST). The University of Goroka is highly focused to provide programs that are diversified, innovative as well as embracing the market demands of the Government and private institutions.

It is the aim of this university to lead and provide vibrant connectivity between different schools, institute and centers both internal and external to offer programs that are market driven and demanding to all stakeholders in PNG and the neighboring Pacific Island nations.
